Angel Zones - Part 3 - May 2010

ahhhhh.....finally the warm weather arrives and i am ready to explore my concept of angel zones. As of yet - my only angel zone (taped off) is in my studio .... i find myself creating art there - it is safe and quiet and allows me to channel inspiration - from? But for my project my objective is to place angel cards in and around NYC each with a message and contact information - for those who would like to share the message they recieved here. The angel card will be marked off in chalk with an angel zone design - so passerbys will know where to find them ... i hope everyone who discovers an angel card can apply it somehow to a part of their own lives and collaborate with me on this project by communicating where they found their angel card and whether or not it was significant to them - the main purpose of the angel zones is to touch others and include them in the creative process as well - so please if you do find one - comment on this blog to share with us your experience in finding your treasure.

So the angel zones have begun - originating from my loft with blue painters tape- they will spread far & wide in the NY area - the found object picture was inspired by the angel zone series.

Waste Not

In January of 08 at The Pheonix Gallery in NYC i was in a group show in the project room called "Waste Not" - curated by Christa Toole. The artists used recycled materials that would otherwise be trash. My piece called "Southern Belle" (after the elliot smith song - hope he's okay with that up in heaven) developed from a completely different conceptual start. I was going to make ribbons out of recycled materials. You know, the ribbons you see as bumper stickers on cars for the U.S. troops or breast cancer - ad infinitum ...... i was poking fun (which i seem to do alot) of how overdone the damned ribbons are - but at the same time since most of us all recognize the ribbon logo i thought it would be a good jumpstart - a recognizable image but not made out of stickers but real materials which would be much more symbolic of the issue that all thse sticker ribbons stand for. So as usual i started out making the ribbons and then the whole idea metomorphasized into a completely different piece and that's where i began having fun - don't know where i was going but i got somewhere and had a good time doing it - it seems to be a bit of a reoccuring event lately when i make a piece of art .... i start with an idea and it seems pretty solid and then during the process of creating my work it i let go and it continues to develop it's own life, so to speak, seperate from the beginning concept - yet born out of it - so it really contains the original message.

SVA Summer Residency Installation Exhibit

Hi - yeah, so i spent the month of July working in the School of Visual Arts Residency studio program that was granted to me and here is what i created -

to start .....

my concept was to make a dreamcatcher that i could personally interpret.... meaning:

to recreate a dreamcatcher using the original understanding of the native american history of dreamcatchers, which i think is beautiful, but to endow it with a contemporary edge - my intention was to keep the idea - and use my own personal art/object collection , not the traditional items - blah - blah , so.....

I also wanted to make a commentary about how this object has been completely bastardized by modern culture - by people hang friggin' dreamcatchers from their rear view mirrors in their cars - for chrisssakes ..... ok, so ....i spent 2 weeks developing this hanging dreamcatcher in my space .....but

it wasn't working -

so .... what develops?

not the hanging dreamcatcher , heh- heh

but

an installation of a dream i had about a past lover that was a fantasy (obviously), but beautiful and a wish that i want to come true ..... but when i woke from this dream , i realized it wasn't real and it stuck in my mind like glue ....i will never forget it .....

i decided to stop trying to make something that could be literally and visually interpreteted as a dreamcatcher and just go with my feelings and make an installation that expressed the feeling i had about the dream while still sticking to the dreamcatcher ideology.

Here is the result -

i included remixed music from Daft Punk's song " Digital Love", because some of the lyrics spoke to me about the feeling i had in the dream, specifically:

"suddenly i feel the shining sun, before i knew it the dream was all gone - i don't know what to do about this dream and you - i wish this dream comes true".

My friend Lowbitt remixed the track (unfortunetly you can't hear it - but , if you want to hear it , it rocks! - email me ) .

so here it is ......

i also did a window installation as you can see from the pics above that was an intro to the room installation ....

damn .....

i wish you could've seen it - it's so hard to capture installations in pics . :)

Lost & Found in the Woods

I created today what might be considered a pseudo lost and found tree on the Laurel Trail at Turkey Mountain Natural Preserve in Westchester County, N.Y. The premise of the installation was to get objects together to hang on a bush/tree to simulate items that visitors to the preserve might have lost on their visit. I posted a little sign that said "Hello i am an artist my name is Fluffy. I put this installation together on 4/20/07. I've hung objects on this bush (in this case it was a tree because there were no friggin bushes to be found anywhere!) in case you have ever lost anything in this park. You are welcome to take anything that can replace what you have lost". Below are photos of the project. It was a fun project to do - i was alittle nervous that somebody would find me doing this and tell me to take it down or worse consider it vandalism and call the cops on me - but it all turned out fine. I felt like i did a good deed ....in so far as if anyone really did find something on the tree to take and it would make them feel better after having lost something, then it was worth it. I felt alittle sad saying goodby to the tree and leaving it to go home, but i may return to see the results of my little "giving tree".

TANK performance

So our art group PIN did a performance/installation at TANK in nyc this past weekend. The performance part was to hand out pieces of gum with our logo stamped on the wrappers to people in the audience to chew and then stick to a panel we made of our circle logo in whatever way they chose to do it. We wore tee shirts with our logo on it and we took a video of it with recorded background noise including the audio of the other artists in the show.The final video will be remixed and edited into a low-fi abstract recycled art piece with the sountrack accompanying it . Should be interesting as a projected audio/visual installation. Thanks to the curator Lauren Rosati for pulling a somewhat chaotic evening together. The theme of the show was Build/Decay - i just found out that our panel with the gum on it was thrown out after the show - so i guess that's the decay part (heh-heh). Atleast we did the show and i think it all turned out the way it was supposed to. Our group rocks!!

old work revisited

i am looking at some old collages i made 2 years ago - they speak to me now - why? they seem to contain perhaps a level of mystery that some of my newer works are missing. at the time i made these collages i was undergoing alot of changes in my life and keeping my work simple because i really didn't have the space or time to focus on bigger projects. They appeal to me - i think i can learn something from these old collages. i believe you can't go back to an old style of working because of the passage of time, your own changes and growth and what you've learned and the creation of your current work reflects those changes. so i don't intend to make new artwoks that look like this because that wouldn't be possible. perhaps i can take the pieces of it that i am intrigued with and incorporate it somehow into the art i am making now. learning fom ones own work.

So - looking through old collages i decide to redo this one .... i think i'm channeling AVAF - psychedelic tripped out stuff - i will be revisiting old work that i haven't looked at in awhile with a new eye - everything changes - but some older work still looks good to me - even better in fact than some of my more recent pieces. I'm also fiending to do some sculpture with discarded plastic stuff all clear - with maybe some weird lighting and then taking photos or videos of it. oh and definetly into containers right now - redecorating them to make sculpture boxes kind-of - i have a bunch of $1 store pkgs. that would work well in this vein and also some plain plastic containers that i can use.

AHHH .....a note about this collage - the black background is really not there - i couldn't figure out a way to scan it without a background - maybe i'll try photographing it and repost it. The shape inside the black background is really the actual shape of the collage.

Oh yeah, I'm really diggin' Noah Lyons aka retardriot and paper rad zine right now. The guys a genius!
